Chess Pro

Chess Pro is based on the chess program used by Microsoft's MSN chess and by far the top ranked chess program on Android: "Chess Free". The core of this is the chess engine "Treebeard", which uses a human-like probability based tree search not commonly found in chess programs, but that delivers a more satisfying human-like playing style.

Features:

  • 10 play levels (Novice->Expert) - This uses intelligent weakening for lower levels. Good for beginners.
  • Uses Treebeard Chess engine (as used in Microsoft's MSN Chess). - This has a unique "human-like" style.
  • Chess Stats, Timers, and Handicaps - Track your career history against each level and improve your rating
  • 2 player hot-seat - Play against your friends!
  • 6 Chess Boards and 5 Chess Piece Sets to choose from.
  • Resume Game - Let's you pick up where you left off.
  • Designed for both Tablet and Desktop

The program repeatedly forces a draw, when that is not the case. It will put me in check, forcing me to move out of check in the only possible way. Then it puts me in check in that position, and forces me to move back. It repeats this about 3 time, and declares it a draw. But the computer has MANY other moves available, and it is not a draw. Also, if you accidently hit the "forfeit" button, it instantly clears the game and restarts another. It does not CONFIRM you really intended to forfeit. I have blown out many good games by accidently clicking on that button.

This game looks great and plays well but the interface needs work. The forfeit button is large and prominent on the screen, and accidently brushing it will cause the game to end with no option for retrieving the game. There should be, at a minimum, a confirmation screen prior to actually closing the game. Also, tracking past games, such as moves lists, seems like fairly basic functionality this game should have.

It works and looks decent too! All the rest really either don't work, crash or are very poorly designed. Still not near as cool looking as Chess Titans. I can't believe that all those games from Windows 7 were dropped in Windows 8

Game has good graphic, nice features. Would like the ability to shut off the move hints.

Not sure why this app is only at 3 stars because it has the major element that all the others in the Store do not have. Intelligence. It's really nice you can adjust the AI as well. I will tell you that level 1 is way too easy unless you are just beginning. Level 5 is just about where all the other Windows 8 Chess apps play at. Adjust this app all the way up though, and you are playing a very skilled opponent on the level of tournaments. Highly recommend you save your time and money, this is it.
