I have been using this editor for a week and been very productive. It has everything I need as a programming editor. I used Notepad RT before. This app is superior because it supports opening multiple files at the same time. A big thanks to the developer for such a great tool and for making it free.
A strong start. Well done.

This app has a very nice and modern UI which is the new design style of Win 8. But I think if you can add auto-complete feature, it'd be great. Maybe I'm a lazy programmer, but that feature could save others' time.
10 December 2012
It's easy to assume that editing will only happen on the desktop, but this app proves that wrong. I don't always have (or need) a desktop environment available, and that means I can also use this on my Surface RT where desktop isn't even an option!
The developer of this app has a very feature-rich editing control, and I get the feeling they are going to port more-and-more functionality to Code Writer. It's only going to get better... and it's free!! I love all the built-in styles for files.
14 September 2014
I love how you are able to edit files but I think it'd be great if they added a ftp transfer to the app so that way you can update the files every time you code without having to use other programs
30 January 2013
This app is intended to accomplish a simple goal: edit text-based files. It accomplishes this directly and effectively, all the while receiving periodic updates that acknowledge user feedback in a constructive fashion. This app, and those behind it, set a high bar for others to match.

- Being able to open multiple files side by side would be nice.
- Implementing line bookmarking like in VisualStudio would be amazing.
Cheers.
18 September 2014
If SFTP support was added, this would be the only IDE I'd use!
18 September 2014
I was searching for a good and simple visual appealing app for code-writing and this one is great. More than expected.
25 May 2014
This is a lovely app, and as I do a lot of PHP coding, I am quite picky about my apps. On w7 I use jEdit, and love it. But this app has some auto-complete features, which is lovely, find and replace, which is also extremely useful.
As for 'Cons', I would say that the 'Browse' for new apps can be disorientating. At the top of the screen, it displays the folder I am in, however when managing multiple domains a lot of the folders have the same names. So I would suggest to take the last three folders (and actually, have an option in the setings to change how many) up there, so instead of 'docs', I can have '/mydomain.com/public_html/docs/contact-us/' for example. That would be SO helpful.

This is a very usable code editor for the Windows 8 Modern UI. In general, coding would probably be best done in your favorite IDE, Notepad++ or some other preferred desktop editor, but this will do the job. Where it really shines is on Windows RT, which cannot run 3rd party desktop apps. Code Writer on a Surface RT combined with Explorer's FTP capabilities has been my workflow while on the road and proven sufficient to allow me to avoid carrying a larger laptop around.
13 May 2013
Again a pretty good coding application. It needs word wrap.. desperately please.. it needs to be able to run the file into the browser..
27 July 2013
this app is great but doesn't have any kind of RUN or VIEW button so that I can see the program other than that it is good
17 April 2014
I use this app a lot now, and I just love it how simple and fast it is, I would completely uninstall my other text-editor if I could just get auto complete for most languages and a feature to allow us to shrink and extract blocks of code either by selection or by default ( functions, if/while/do statements etc. )
Keep up the good work!!
24 December 2012
Outstanding, considering. It's not nearly as functional as something like Notepad++ on, say, the Windows 8 Pro desktop, but for a Metro app it is very very good.
A couple of things I noticed right away that I wish it had:
1. Ability to open arbitrary extensions, e.g., my.sample.js.3.14.2
2. Show all search results.
16 December 2012
This is a great application. It makes excellent use of the clean minimalist Windows 8 interface. Does exactly what it says it does, lets you write code and gets out of the way. This app has excellent integration with SkyDrive. My only hit against it at the moment is weak syntax highlighting of PowerShell files. Syntax highlighting seemed a little weak for the other file types I use often as well. Minor complaint, sure to improve given the well thought out nature and execution of this app.
7 October 2013
its really great but it should have a RUN feature.
19 July 2013
it'd be better if it had a compiler
9 July 2013
Its great for <HTML> and <CSS> but anything complicated like C# and JavaScript require something else. It would be better if it could Compile/Build the code.
23 May 2013
Fantastic. Recommended.
12 April 2013
Need to be able to compile code
24 March 2013
I am a avid notepad++ user, but I do like the way everything is set up on this program. I figured out how to set the background from dark to light (which was my only issue). The program is still pretty new to me, but has a small learning curve. I really like the language selection section on the left hand side, I thought that was brilliant. Although I am using this application for a PC desktop, I think this would be a great addition to a tablet as well. Good Job Guys!

I feel like a fool for buying HaxPad when this editor is light years ahead in UI and functionality. Being able to edit multiple files at once with tabbed windows is a godsend. My only complaint is I wish there were more themes or that we could customize our own theme. Word wrapping would be great too but rarely needed. Even with my wish list this app gets 5 stars!
20 December 2012
When I first installed Code Writer, there were a few omitted features and usability issues. Others and myself posted our concerns on their forum. Not only were the team quick to respond, they also had a positive attitude about using the suggestions. I wish other software companies had the enthusiasm of this group. So check it out, and if it doesn't quite have everything you need, provide them feedback. You may be amazed to have several of your suggestions in the next release.
19 December 2012
This app has a lot of potential to replace notepad++ especially for windows rt. It just needs a few more languages, including Fortran 90 as well as 77 to be useful for me.
16 December 2012
Code Highlighting is based on file extension instead of file context. For example, my .php file contains HTML, PHP, JavaScript syntax and this app only correctly highlight PHP syntax.
15 December 2012
A reviewer didn't like the dark background, but there is a "light" theme as well. Another moron said the thick/thin scrollbars was a bug. It is obviously a feature that the scrollbars go thin while scrolling so you can see the text beneath them.
10 December 2012
I have looked at all the competition and this is the best syntax editor app out there.
27 October 2014
I like this app, but I wish there was syntax highlighting for VHDL and Verilog as well!
9 February 2014
It really needs a auto completion feature. This is definetly what sets IDEs like eclipse ahead of this by far.
14 November 2013
