A symbol icon and Unicode character browser app. (This app is mainly intended for app developers, e.g., Windows programmers and designers.)
Windows provides a set of "symbols" to be used in UI controls (XAML or HTML) such as SymbolIcon. More generally, you can use any Unicode characters as "icons" in various controls, including XAML FontIcon and AppBarButton, etc. The "Icon Browser" app lets you browse the list of symbols and Unicode characters for your next Windows app.
We have created this app for our own needs, as developers, with the following three primary use cases in mind:
1) We need to be able to browse, and search, all SymbolIcon symbols and Unicode characters in common symbol blocks.
2) We should be able to organize, and bookmark, symbols and characters so that we can easily find our favorite icons when we need them.
3) It would be nice if we could browse a small set of daily random icons for inspiration, say, for our next app ideas, without having to go through thousands of symbols and characters.
We believe that we have achieved our original goals with this first release of Icon Browser. But, more will come. Refer to the list of currently available features below. It should be noted that only symbol-related features (not general Unicode character browsing) are available in Trial version. Please support our development effort if you find the app useful in any way.
New Feature: "Icon Clipboard"
Icon clipping is a two step process. (1) In the icon listing pages, you first select icons to be added to the "icon clipboard". (2) Then, from the icon clipboard page, you select one or all characters in the clipboard, which, on Windows, copies the selected characters to the system clipboard, and which, on Windows Phone, opens a "Share UI" so that selected characters can be copied to another app like Notepad. Note that Icon Clipboard is for temporary clipping only, and the icon clips are not stored.
** Limitations:
(1) Font families are limited to a small set of common fonts installed on (all) Windows 10 devices. (2) Currently, there is no easy way to filter out "non printable" characters from the font icon list.
** Note:
(1) You can view the "ASCII table" using the range, 0x21 through 0x7E, for instance. (2) The new "symbol" list from the Segoe MDL2 Assets font can be displayed by specifying the range, say, 0xE001 ~ 0xEB52. (Windows 10 only.)
