Best Windows 8 Apps

I love the concept of this app and it even has most of the magazines I read but it has one very big flaw and a minor one. The minor one is that it can be a little buggy with magazines you have pined to the start screen. The big flaw and the reason I took 2 stars is because it doesn't work without internet. Even if you download the magazines before hand the app won't work without a network connection. This makes it useless on planes or when traveling which is when I want to use it the most. If you fix the app so I can read downloaded magazines when I have my Surface set to Airplane Mode (no internet) I will update my review with 5 stars.

I was enthusiastic about the app and the ability to have a decent range of magazines to choose from and as many on the list as I wanted for a flat monthly fee. However the user experience of selecting, downloading and especially READING of the magazines is very poor. Why it doesn't predownload the magazines I've selected is the first problem. The second and biggest problem is the reading experience. The app doesn't respond well and doesn't make good use of the screen. Not recommended.

couldn't you just time-restrict free access within the app for the first 30 days (instead of forcing me to sign-up on the site before I try it)..? really think that would get more people to try this out and eventually pay.
and the price is actually very reasonable so I could see such an implementation being pretty successful in bringing on subscribers.

I have to use my obsolete IPAD as this app does not work for Surface
Tablets. It yields an 'error' message any time you attempt to download a magazine.
With magazine subscriptions basically free these days, a $10 or $15 a month prices is a joke. I was expecting $10 or $15 per year. On top of this, the selection is desperately lacking. Almost no good business magazines, no decent outdoor magazines, only one or two tech choices. This app is irrelevant until they quintuple their selection and slash their price.

This app is incredibly slow functioning and downloading. Takes even longer to save than download and is unreliable. Also dislike that you cannot tab or mark pages in magazines for reference. Had high hopes, but not an efficient or comprehensive app to use. Deleting.

No way -

The App either doesn't open or takes minutes every time it is opened. Either the App needs to be fixed or I will cancel my subscription.

The concept is great and I really enjoyed the service on my iPad, but I cannot get the app to load in W8.1. It shows the splash screen with a wallpaper full of magazine cover pages, but it never gets beyond that. I agree with other commenters that if this doesn't get fixed, then I will have to cancel.
Posting an app - even featuring it, when it is available only in the United States, is insulting, annoying, and frustrating, when you discover - only after going through the process of entering all your info - that you have been wasting your time. This sort of oversight is the kind of thing that makes people turn to another operating system. Please either don't offer the app to those of us fortunate enough not to live in the US, or let us know up front with a tiny little bit of text.
Requires credit card for 30days try period.

Been waiting for this! Great to see on Win 8 and Win RT...

I've had Next Issue now for several months and use it religiously and love it . It is an awesome app, and has a lot of great magazines. You have access to all the back magazines and many are interactive. It lacks a bookmark and highlight feature which would be nice (only reason for a 4 star not 5 star), but has a overview feature with thumbnails that allows very quick navigation. You can also pin your favorites. LOVE this app.
I love this app, wish they had it for windows phone. It would be awesome on my 1520.
Over a year subscriber, still happy customer.
Make library searchable, by entire library, select magazines, current issue, both online (not in my collection or downloaded), and offline (just the ones I have in my collection.
Also a 'research' or 'student' mode. Highlight, make notes, share to other apps, auto bibliography for all quotes, ideas, referenced. Share with other document apps.
Story mode, social 'stories' share

Some magazines are fuzzy screenshots...terrible to try and read. Others have the interactive content that is nice but don't take up the whole screen...seems to be a half-hearted port from iPad. Performance is slow, difficult to get the app to fully download a publication for offline reading.
No New Yorker available for Windows 8. If there are restrictions to which titles are available by platform, that should be upfront. Not something you find out after subscribing. Shame and cancelled.
Worth the subscription price! App flows great and for me had enough reads to justify the cost.

At the same time though, I'm not sure it'd be worth the $15 a month for the magazines I'd want. I mean through Zinio I can get these for more like $10-20 a year, so as long as I'm not reading 10 magazines, which I'm not, the price is high. If ESPN Insider access also came with it, then maybe it'd be worth it though.
Also, many of these scrolling page elements, where you would tap and drag to scroll them when on a tablet, just don't work with a mouse.

I still find the two part process which must take place before content is available offline a bit slow and confusing--otherwise I like the app quite well.
I had to cancel the subscription because I could not select a mag. to read.
Is there no cust. support
This is the app I've been waiting for, but I can't use it since I live in Canada.

If you're okay giving your credit card number as part of the 30-day trial, the selection is definitely worth it! Some magazines even have older issues for you to read. They all look amazing and are easy to navigate.
(I'm using the app on Windows 8.)

This has become quite irritating that I can't view the magazines because it keeps asking for upgrade but the system doesn't allow you to upgrade.
Please reimburse me for months I was unable to view and fix the problem so windows 8 users can upgrade.

Not a "free" app - a splash screen that requires a credit card to do anything at all. Don't waste your time.
Free trial cannot be activated without providing credit card information. Backwards. App looked promising, but will be deleted before ever being able to give it a fair chance.
Performance is horrible.....both in app launch and download of content.
App crashes regularly for no reason..
I couldn't recommend this to anyone.....
I have really been waiting for this app to show up on Windows 8 so I could subscribe to the service but have been very disappointed by:
-- initial load is very, very slow
-- magazines take forever to download (reliably over a 21 MB connection)
-- app crashes when you change orientation
consistently poor experience over Surface as well as Acer S7. Really prefer the look and feel of Windows 8 app experience than iOS (other than limited back catalog selection.) Wish perf can be improved!

(updated June 25, 2013) Love the variety of magazines, even at the lower tier. Really like the magazines with dynamic content. Would like to see magazine downloading work smoother. Currently takes a long time and doesn't download in the background properly. Finding that the background downloading process constantly crashes.

Nice to have the content, but downloading a magazine to read offline takes an hour each, crazy considering I have a 40MB pipe.

It is not enough that I have to provide my credit card details for a 30 day trial, but the specified credit card's billing address has to be a US address, which is not stated in the description or the website in advance.
It's wonderful to have so many titles and back issues available, and the interface is a dream. So far in my experience I've found a few pages missing from this or that issue. I'm docking one star for what would have been five for this review. It is my hope this will be resolved over time.
I should like to see the service continue to deepen its library of available titles. I'd love to see more specialty and niche magazines. I shall probably subscribe to the service.
