Very fast response in connecting my Windows 2008 terminal server and Windows 8 desktop. A very useful app for Windows RT machine to behave like a full Windows 8 Pro machine. By the way, using RDP is much faster than VPN and in my view, more secure. The onscreen keyboard will show up by touching a keyboard icon at the right hand corner of the taskbar. One can use the new Skydrive instead of creating a local drive.
23 December 2012
Windows 8 actually brought out the best of all the apps. Apple must be shaking in their boots right now
13 April 2014
It could be a killer app but needs a tutorial on how to use it. It is also available on different platforms.
28 December 2012
I depend on the ability to copy files from the local machine to the machine being managed via desktop remotely. Client drive mapping do not appear to be able to do this in the Metro version of remote desktop. This makes the metro version of this app much less useful for me.
Also, since as a Windows server administrator I keep MANY remote desktop sessions open at a time, a method of switching more easily between sessions would be much appreciate.
Lastly, the app has become crash prone lately.
31 December 2013
Despite being very good and experienced with remote computer functions, I was unable to connect my desktop to my full Win8.1 tablet.
6 December 2013
I wished it had more to offer, but it is just a basic full screen connection, with a nice switch between connections due to the Metro style. It doesn't provide the followings:
1- Ability to connect at different resolutions below full screen.
2- Ability to Map local drives to the remote session
3- Ability to organize connections by folder and set properties from the folder.
4- Ability to set different pictures or icons for the different connections.
5- Ability to label the connections.
29 June 2013
Everything about this app is great with the exception that there is no way to access the touch keyboard when you are using a tablet and you cannot zoom in with touch. Key things that are needed to make it complete
5 June 2013
It would be nice if the soft keyboard would pop up, for tablet users.
19 December 2013
Graphics of this app really disappoints me but it works like a charm.....
31 January 2013
This is a nice app, but it needs a better way to manage connections, the ability to rename them would be a step in the right direction. Also control over the other settings that the desktop version allows would be nice.
31 January 2013
When using on touch screen, charm menu and other slide menus don't work. They control the current computer rather than the one you are connected to. On the inbuilt native version, once you are in remote desktop mode, all gestures and even the Windows button on Surface RT controls the remote computer. Once minimized, controls switch to the computer you are on. The native version also gives you more control.
23 October 2013
This app not only won't install, it cannot be deleted from the pending installs list. I'm using Surface RT with 8.1 preview.
31 December 2012
Does not save credentials
Does not allow connecting /admin
Does not give touch keyboard
1 December 2012
This app is a huge disappointment. In Windows 7 remote desktop I could copy and paste files between work and home computer. Why in the world would you take that feature away?
17 December 2012
Unlike the standard RDP clients on desktops, you cannot control the sharing of drives and devices.
3 December 2012
This program realy needs an option to bring up the keyboard on screen for use on a tablet
27 October 2012
Quick and versatile, great user interface, I'll be using this every day at work.
4 January 2013
I use this on my Surface to connect to my Win8 desktop via home WiFi and it works perfectly. Great for when I want to run apps that aren't compatible with WinRT
29 December 2012
When I use Remote Desktop, I connect to work machines via Cisco VPN. As far as I can tell after hours of trying, this app won't do that.
24 October 2012
This app has almost no feature parity versus the real desktop RDP client. Cannot have multiple clients connected that are placed into separate windows/screens--everything is stuck in whatever screen the Start Screen lives. Also, if you happen to page away from the app, you eventually lose the connections to your remote clients.
31 October 2013
This app would be 5 stars if you could specify the resolution you want to view in and have it handle the scaling properly. Connecting at 1920 x 1080 on a tiny Surface 2 screen makes for a poor and almost unusable experience. Sure, you can zoom in, but that doesn't really help because you can't even multi touch or anything to scroll around the screen. Pretty worthless. I just want to connect at a lower resolution so I can actually see and read the remote session without a magnifying glass!
4 March 2013
This app doesn't offer a method to pull up the software keyboard, so without a keyboard like on my tablet, this app is pointless. Back to using Remote Desktop on my iPad!
29 December 2012
Title says it all. Without a hard keyboard this application is almost useless.
10 November 2012
Why is there NO way to invoke the virtual keyboard without swiping from right, selecting settings and then selecting keyboard? Every time you minimize the keyboard in this app you have to go through the same steps to get the keyboard back. These tablet can do multi-touch, make up a gesture, tell people what it is and provide a manual. This should be complete common sense. This app is worthless on a tablet due to this oversight. Please fix this.
4 November 2012
Once again, perfectly mixing fun and FINALLY a productive tablet...Surface wins hands down.
30 October 2012
Very glad that windows 8 RT uses remote desktop. We are able to access, monitor & administer our servers from a tablet now!
19 September 2012
Pathetic
14 September 2012
This app is very usefull and has some improvements for the default MSTSC, but some things that don't work in this new version
PROS:
- Save multiples connections.
- Allow open multiples connections too.
CONS:
- You can't set a DISPLAY NAME for the connection, so all of them shows with IP Address, it's boring to find the correctly connection.
- The ability to copy a file from your desktop don't work anymore, if you need to send a file try other way like FTP, boring to send a simple file.
29 July 2014
I've put Microsoft's RD app on both my wife's iPad on my Surface Pro. Here's what I've discovered:
1. When you open the keyboard on the iPad, the screen automatically shifts to keep the cursor in view. When you do it on the Surface, the keyboard cover's what you're trying to see. Then, when you try to drag the scroll bar to bring your cursor back into view, the keyboard often closes again.
2. You can open and close the keyboard on the iPad with a single tap. On the surface it's a swipe and a tap to open and two taps to close.
At any rate, it seems very clunky in comparison. Shouldn't Microsoft's own app designed for it's own operating system be as good or better than the one it designed to run on the OS of it main competitor?
Just sayin'...
5 May 2014
Found a pretty crappy bug where touch calibration is off when using 1920x1080 resolution on my Surface Pro 1 - long press for right-click are in the wrong location and just do not work, so I need to use the touch pointer for right-click. Verified by switching between the classic RDP client and this Metro version, and the behavior is only seen with this Metro version. Also, this bug is not seen when using 1600x900 resolution in the Metro version.
Otherwise, works well as a Metro Remote Desktop client; you can snap it, etc. Needs the ability to copy and paste files to and from the session, as you can do with the classic Windows 7 Remote Desktop client. Also needs the ability to connect with specific resolutions instead of the same resolution as the client machine.
A dumb thing with Windows 8.1 Update is the title bar in Metro apps. It's unnecessary in the Remote Desktop app, and always gets in the way when I'm trying to close an app in the connected session.
