VLC for Windows 8 fails in a few respects. First, if you're not connected to wi-fi (i.e. you're traveling and don't have access), it won't load properly long enough for you to navigate to your locally-saved files.
Secondly, there are lots of playback issues in the Windows 8 app that I don't experience in the Windows desktop version.
Thirdly, there are no subtitles. So if you're loading mkv files with subtitles and trying to view them within VLC for Windows 8, you're out of luck.
After trying to make this app work for a couple of hours, I gave up and just navigated to the VideoLAN website and downloaded the desktop version, which works beautifully.

I hate hate HATE apps that have their own, in-house built file systems. Are you serious? I can’t friggin open a particular video file I know the location of? You’re really going to assume that your app will be so much a part of my life that you’re going to spend the first several usage hours trawling my file system, indexing what’s already been indexed?
Try harder next time. Or rather, work smarter, not harder next time.

This app is in beta, so it will only improve over time. The developers have done what seemed like an impossible effort. So far the functionality works well considering the limited feature set for a beta app.
12 March 2014
Soon after the home screen comes up the app crashes. Every. Single. Time. For a year in development, I'd expect better results.
19 October 2014
This will not play DVD's...which is the entire reason I downloaded it.
28 April 2014
we gave our money in the kickstarter for a Win8 app. But that was assuming that we'd get updates and eventually, more functionality. This is a pretty poor example at the moment. Things work okay, but the app's not been updated for windows 8.1, and it doesn't play DVDs. As a basic player though, it works fine. Good, but needs updates.
18 March 2014
3/18/2014- VLC updated to fix crash bug, update your reviews accordingly.
I'm bit miffed at the time the app took to develop but glad its here for x86/x64, thanks. Hope devs are dedicated to future updates
Regardless, its UX/UI beats its Android& iOS counterpart
Should note, the app works fine on my Dell Venue 8 Pro-- all OS updates applied
12 March 2014
crashes
1 March 2015
1) There is no way to sort videos and when videos are numerous, video section would be too messy.
2)Subtitle isn't supported for mkv files.
3 October 2014
Hopefully this'll get fixed ASAP

...because it's a horrible waste of space.
The app seems to have problems with finding and indexing my library; not all my music is showing up.
20 March 2015
Re-coding the engine in the new runtime is a very ambitious undertaking, and kudos for that. Great to see it being re-done as a Universal App.
The new interface is much better, but it still feels strange.
Some design choices that could be better:
- "zoom" animation when mousing over track names is weird, a simple change of font wight or background would be better
- strange animations when switching between views (movies - camera roll - shows etc.)
- etc...
Best of luck, guys!

I was very excited about this app; however, disappointed at this initial release. MP4 videos play only the audio track, though they play fine with other playback apps.
27 March 2015
The newest version crashes immediately after opening.
16 May 2015
Can't add subtitles.
3 October 2014
opens and closes Immediately. opening the file directly the video works though. will update review If this gets fixed
22 August 2014
It won't install on MS Surface 2. Useless. I don't need a metro app for my desktop or laptop. I need it for my tablet...
12 March 2014
As soon as I open, it starts indexing my library and then immediately crashes to the start screen.
3 April 2015
Works fine it you are just playing. There are a few crashes when importing subtitles or using advanced features that needs to be fixed.
24 March 2015
On my Surface 2, Mkv files with DTS audio track is finally supported!! Kudos! However, subtitles with either Unicode or non-Unicode Chinese characters are still not being displayed properly. Pls fix asap. Thanks,
On a different note, the app version simultaneously installed onto a regular PC with Windows 8.1 still does not support DTS audio track. I didn't mean VLC 2.2.0. I meant the one found in the app store.
22 March 2014
As an avid proponent of both VLC and Windows 8, I look forward to a final working version. However, the last update did not fix the crashing issue for me on any of my 3 Win 8 devices.
17 March 2014
It doesn't work since it always crashes on start so it's unusable. Where is the RT version?????!!!!!! Beta or not, this shouldn't have passed the windows store. Is this why no one wants to make apps for windows 8? Is it so difficult to make a working media player on windows 8 that doesn't suck!?!?!
8 May 2014
Unlike the original desktop app, this one doesn't support .flv files. That is pretty sad.
4 October 2014
The app crashes every time I try to play a file.
3 October 2014
дизайн такое чувство поменяли. а все как вылетало и не работало, так и осталось.
сплошное разочарование.
22 March 2014
no video is displayed and crashes many times while playing music
17 October 2014
did not open properly go back to background when open it.
12 March 2014
Sorry guys but you can do better. I know in'll be back with a better rating.
1 June 2014
VIDEO IS NOT BEING DISPLAYED ONLY AUDIO
7 March 2015
I am updating my review that I am impressed with the decision to make a universal app. The app has greatly improved but it looks like app is still beta.
One thing I noticed while playing music is that it fails to produce any audio but scratching noise.
