Comments for Kindle

The Kindle app for Windows 8.1 seems to be broken for the most part. I had upgraded from Windows 8 and can read all my existing books but new purchases won't download. I had to install the kindle application for XP/Vista/Windows 7 to be able to download new purchases. Also the app won't read Kindle formatted books from download sites that supply public domain books.

The latest version doesn't work if you open it without an internet connection. You can't even read the books that are already on your device. That's a real problem on a plane. If you actually comply with the law and shut your device off, you can't use your kindle app until you reconnect to the internet. All you get is a blank black screen. You either have to buy in flight internet access long enough to sign in or do without the app. This needs fixed. Also, there is no ability to sort the books into groups like you can on an actual kindle device. That would be a pretty easy thing to do on a Windows device. Instead, you get one long scrolling blob of books. This needs groups and semantic zoom.

No way to add local books. Update 12/4/12: Still can't add your own ebooks (MOBI, or PDF), it's insane that ths still isn't a feature. You can do it with the IOS and Android version. I will not use this until that is a feature. Will keep at one star until that is added.

I am consistently running into problems downloading books. I receive error messages every other attempt at downloading books or connecting to the store. Many of my purchased books won't download at all. It seems that Amazon devs & leadership care nothing at all about the Win 8RT platform. Every other device I use a Kindle app on works flawlessly. App experience is killing the possibilities of this amazing device!

My Windows 8 version refuses to run because it claims to be outdated. According to the app store I have the latest version installed. WTF!

I feel like the mobile app is more functional. The major problem I am encountering is that the mobile app allows for syncing of progress of personal documents while this doesn't even acknowledge personal documents exist.

I'd been using the kindle app on iPad for a while when I got my MS Surface RT. The iPad app is much better. The iPad version has a two column display mode which is needed even more on the Surface because of its 16:9 shaped screen. Also the iPad version is easier to turn pages, and cosmetically the page turning looks nicer. I hope Amazon will take the time to make the Surface version as good as the iPad's.

Nowhere near as good as iPad, can't even handle it's own native format, and Amazon has ignored the issue. Amazon needs to hand out some pink slips.

I can't seem to open Mobi files, plus there are still a slew of limitations that the desktop version doesn't have.

This app is slow and full of bugs. It does a poor job of rotating between portrait and landscape mode (often disappearing for seconds). "read to furthest page" is slow. I sometimes have to resort to a manual sync. In comparison, on my iPhone it syncs immediately. Page turning is inconsistent on my surface. Sometimes a simple touch works and often I have to touch twice to have it work. All of my issues seem like trivial fixes. I really wish amazon would focus on quality.

If you have a smartphone or iPad (at least in terms of Tablets) you don't need and shouldn't waste your time on this app. For the PC and Surface you CANNOT Sync your personal documents and read them through this app.

The extremely limited feature set of this app is not worthy of the Kindle Name. Compared to the much-expanded functionality Kindle Apps on other platforms, this is a joke. The lack of personal document support, the slow load time, the clunky lay out, and the general laggard, plodding pace of the app renders it next to useless as anything more than a threadbare storefront window for the Amazon Kindle Book Store. Pass on it until they built it out fully.

Biggest complaint-- not all Kindle books are supported by the Win8 app. Very frustrating. I want to buy all my textbooks for my surface but cannot. Furthermore, the app itself is very clunky and slow with limited functionality. can only view one page at a time in landscape mode and the resolution of the images are very low. This app and its support by Amazon leave much to be desired. Not enough space to download multiple book. I can't view all of the books I have purchased. Expand the memory!

Brand New Asus tablet with tons of free space. Somehow the one and only book I purchased stops at 80% then says its "full". I realize Win8 is a new OS but this is silly. Edit: Kindle support has told me to contact Asus regarding this problem. This is after texting and talking to four techs that kept pushing it up the food chain. All I was asking for was a rough estimate when this might be fixed. All I got was incorrect, ineffective, cookie cutter responses. Lovely ....

The app is VERY disappointing. Did Amazon test it before releasing it to the general public? You can only download a few books before it says you are out of memory. No magazines! The Kindle Store does not even work - at all. So Amazon kicked a turd across the finish line. Thanks for nothing Amazon.

I've been using Kindle apps since the first one came out around 2008 or 2009. I've used them on iOS, Android, and Windows. The Kindle app for Windows 8.1 is by far the worst. It's almost as bad as the original Kindle for iOS. I have it installed on my HP laptop and Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet. Page animation isn't very good, but it is functional. Still, it's better on every other platform. Why not Windows 8? Kindle won't sync back up to Amazon. Oh, it says it does, but when I read a book on my laptop or tablet and tell it to sync, it says it's synced to the furthest point across all my devices. But when I try to read it on my Kindle Fire HD, it's still synced to the last point where I read it on a non-Windows 8 version of Kindle. Even the legacy version of Kindle works better than this. I'd bump my review up to 3 or 4 stars if my books would sync back up correctly. After all, that is the basic functionality that is supposed to make a Kindle app. I'd love the page animation iOS has.

Several updates later, and this is mediocre at best. Must support sideloading of files, page turning is SLOW and with no animations. I'm still using it because I don't want to buy another device, but I expected much better.

Let's face it, this needs to be compared to the iPad version. Can't zoom pictures like the iPad, no page turn effects like the iPad, and an overall poor experience, where the iPad version offers an extraordinary one.

I can't even sign in, I get a "The application encountered an unexpected network error" message, even though the internet works fine.

This is a perfect example of a good digital company being lazy and cheap in their programming... just take a look at the company size difference between amazon and Barnes and noble and then look at the difference if application quality... Completely disappointing... If nook was on windows phone I would uninstall this immediately. (windows phone equally disappointing) The android ios version of the kindle is a lot easier to see and use nook version is overall just better... I been using nook and reinstalled this to see if they fixed the optimization problems the DIDN'T still! Sticking with nook Another year later still the same problems...

I keep getting a "not enough space" error when I download my books. This is well documented on the internet. The application offers no place to change the save location, as I have plenty of hard drive space. I have spoken with Microsoft and Amazon on this matter, both blame each other. Please see Amazon's Forum Moderator "David O" explanation at the address below: http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/forums/kindleqna?ie=UTF8&cdForum=Fx1GLDPZMNR1X53&cdThread=TxCSVNEBX1YSPY

Update: Network error was fixed and app is working great... I receive "unexpected network error" at sign in page. I'm connected and all other apps are working fine! Anybody in Amazon tests the apps?

10 September 2012

Windows 8 hasn't launched yet, so it's totally understandable that this app is not ready yet neither. Currently it doesn't sync with content already on Amazon.com which is (IMHO) a very likely scenario: people who already have kindles have bought content with them, and might just want a way to occasionally see the books they already own on their PC too (for reference perhaps, or when they forgot their kindle), so hopefully this can be fixed before Windows 8 launch on October 26th.

On Microsoft Surface Pro 2 running Windows 8.1 App will not allow highlights on a regular basis. Some books I can highlight, some I can't. I cannot delete book from device and reinstall. Books I have Previously highlighted in App will not let me continue to highlight.

I can only use books I brought through Kindle? Why can't I read my own ebook on my computer with this app? I know with actual Kindle, you can put your own books on the device. Why not the app?

avatar

28 July 2013

This app is nothing short of ridiculous. I own 3 graphic novels, NONE of which are "supported for kindle for windows 8". Since when does Amazon have the right to tell me what devices I can and cannot use for my own books? Buying these books from Amazon was a HUGE mistake, one which I don't want anyone else to have to make. I can't speak for all the books out there, but the ones I read are supported on the Nook app, and that works across Windows 8, iOS and Android. Goodbye Kindle, hello Nook

3 May 2013

After the April 2013 update most everything is much improved -- response time is much better, font sizing much improved, highlighting actually usable! The one remaining drawback is that there is still no search function (at least that I can find). This is a VERY major drawback, but everything else is so improved over the initial release that I will live with that for a while. Hopefully the next update will resolve that and will happen soon.

I would love to say that this app is as good as I wish it could be. But it isn't. The idea of the app is wonderful, but the actual software is nothing to enjoy. Constant crashes, failure to sync with the amazon account reliably, inordinate loading times for books stored on your device and more really do nothing to make this app worth it- and that says something considering it is free.
