This is a really fantastic app in almost every respect. The one problem I have with it, however, is a deal breaker of a problem. I am unable to remove the sources I don't want. With the understanding that this comment will likely hurt my credibility, it is true none the less: This makes me feel as though Microsoft/Bing is attempting to indoctrinate me or something. Microsoft, no one likes a bully. My suggestion: Get rid of the "Featured"/"Sponsored" news. Corruption abounds enough as it is.

How are we supposed to share pieces of news? Via bingnews-URLs? What's the matter in giving us real HTTP-URLs? It's not possible to share any interesting articles to my friends and colleagues. Please fix that.

I have tried to fix the app 4times using the repair feature in the Bing news app and it has been a total waste of my time! Fix the news app Microsoft!!!!!!

There's no way to remove categories... I couldn't give 2 flying hoots about Entertainment & Sports, yet it's in my face along with the rest of the news in this app as if those things actually mattered.

Ever since the upgrade to Windows 8.1, this app no longer works. I kind of enjoyed browsing through news highlights in this app while munching on breakfast and drinking my morning tea. Guess I get to uninstall this piece of crap and find something else that actually knows that platforms upgrade, and when they upgrade, the app needs to upgrade too.

This app recently stopped working right. I liked the way it gathered and presented news. But It Stopped Working!!! Fix the BUG!!!

Click on the live tile that shows a news story. What would you expect to happen? I expect the story shown on the tile to be displayed, but evidently not Microsoft. I'm about ready to jettison this nonsense that no doubt does a better job tracking my interests than it does providing the service it implies it provides. UPDATE: now come to find out the news app won't play flash videos. Adios!! In general, Windows 8, the "unified interface" concept, and Microsoft's lousy attempts at "apps" is an EPIC FAIL. I mean EPIC.

This app was an unexpected treasure on Windows 8. From the start it had a great variety of domestic and international news, downloaded and updated, available at my fingertips, and I added sources. I could get news from major outlets in France and Germany added in at no charge and in just seconds of effort. I had just said that I should buy Surface Pro 3s for two other family members, precisely because of this app. Then overnight it quit working. It freezes on the lead article. I uninstall, and reinstall, and it looks just like before, but when I read any story and hit the back arrow it goes back, not to the menu listings, but to the lead story, and I can't advance from there. All downloaded stories, as well as my additional sources, disappear and it starts downloading again, but when it is finished I have access to a few more stories, but only in the basic set, available in line, one at a time. No menu. MSFT, please fix this. Otherwise a major asset of the Surface is gone.

This app is great, but it gets frustrating having to stare at the same picture from a top news story from weeks or even months ago. Just update the bloody cover picture already!!

Loved this app until the update broke it, please fix

The "News" app can't share (via the "charms" menu) with the "People" app? So, if I stumble upon an article that I find fascinating, I can't share it to Facebook/Twitter via the "People" app? This seems kind of basic. I'm reading an article about the most recent "Frankenstorm" that's developing and I sure would like to share it with friends of mine on the east coast. However, reading the article now, there's no way to do that and no URL to copy. That's a pretty big feature to miss...

Excellent example of a great Windows 8 App. Being able to add custom RSS/Atom sources would be a nice addition. Also, sharing news with People App and other 3rd party social Apps doesn't work. And pinning news sources and news topics in the Start screen doesn't show Live tile updates. Please fix those issues.

I use the News app daily and I know folks have the apps crashing upon launch. Please refer to this article on how to fix it: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2932706. It has worked for me. I haven't had problems with it since. Update: if you get the latest update from Windows (8.1 update labeled KB2919355), then you can repair the apps through the store or uninstall/reinstall. Note that uninstall/reinstall wasn't working, but the last Windows update has a fix for that.

Not sure if I put in a bad source or what, but it crashes as soon as it starts. It's been doing this for months now on all of my PCs. Huge bummer because it's actually a showcase app when it works well. update 3/12/14 - same problem. still crashes on startup. Tried removing the app from all of my PCs, now it makes the WP8 version crash as well. Very aggravating.

I am getting an ad for "Get MSN News Ap". It cannot be removed and is a pain when trying to do anything on the screen. I have tried going to the install site and I am told that this Ap is already installed on my computer. I guess it came with the computer when I got it, as I didn't install the AP. I don't use ap's for anything. They are no help to me, if I want to go to a site, I go there. To paraphrase a movie line, " I don't need to stinking aps!! Unless someone can tell me how to remove this piece of crap I will just have to drop MSN as my home page and use someone else.

I received this bloatware on my new tablet. It crashes fairly consistently, does not save preferences and seems to put MSN stories above all else. I have had viruses easier to uninstall

New version... Now you can add sources... But it will still insist on showing other content I DON'T CARE. Uninstalling. Again >.<

avatar

24 January 2015

Doesn't remember category settings...or resets for no reason. Reloads home screen with every back arrow...makes it real slow if you have more than a couple categories. I like the user interface, which is the only reason I have tolerated it so far. Update: Dropping my rating to one star because I am just fed up. Today, I am searching for another news aggregator. MSN clearly is either not supporting this app, incompetent or actually likes this behavior.

Contains offensive and disreputable news sources which cannot be deleted. Clicking on them shows their content! This must be fixed before I will use it.

App doesn't load and continues to shut down

avatar

22 August 2014

When I first began using this application, I truly enjoyed it. Bing news compiled the articles from all over the web quite effectively. To put the metaphorical "cherry on top", the app downloaded all the articles I could ever want to read. But in the most recent update, the sections that I had not chosen (top stories, politics, world, etc.) were not able to be accessed. Considering the fact that these were the only articles that could be downloaded, this makes me quite irate. It has reduced my use of the app to a mere glance, instead of the in-depth reading I had become accustomed to during my previous use. If you want to casually read news (especially without an internet connection) I would recommend not usinf

5-23-14 update fixed crashing issue. Crashes every time as of 5-21-14. Hasn't been stable for weeks. The interface is nice and there are many sources available, but it has some really annoying flaws. It will always reset my sources section to the default - all the major, pre-selected sources like ABC, Fox, Reuters remain (or reappear if I removed them) and it removes all of the ones I personally added. This is just for directly accessing the "Sources" section on the main News page. Adding sources' headlines to the News page works fine. Also, I frequently have to tap a link several times before it even goes to the link. Some sources don't even appear to have any content. I really wish Microsoft would more strictly regulate the quality of their apps. Especially when it's for Microsoft, by Microsoft - it should be flawless.

I really like this app. My only gripe is that you can not delete news sources if you wish to. Yes, you can for the sources YOU add, but not any of the sources that are "hardwired" into the app. This is a real downer as the app uses several sources that I just can not stand.

avatar

27 January 2013

This app does not allow you to choose your sources. And to make it worse, if you accidentally add a source to you My News section, the remove option does not work with the Fox News section. I've deleted this app until they either fix this remove option, or give me the option of not having to put up with drivel from this "source". I would have given this a zero rating if it were possible.
