I just got into this app on my Windows Phone, and it works great - but the Windows 8.1 app doesn't seem to support background audio. It will only play if the app is visible on the screen - if I minimize it or switch to the desktop, it stops playing. When I'm at work, I don't want to have my listening habits constantly visible on my screen, and sacrificing the screen space is annoying.

This app is awesome! The app airs stories based on your local NPR station. I've been listening to NPR for a long time and you don't have to listen to your local station you can listen to stories from any local station from around the country. I like to listen to all of NPR's member station streams.

yes, I can select my local station, but there is no way of getting local programming.... again, like many other windows apps, just go to my browser and the website...

The program starts successfully a little more than half the time. When it is not successful, the NPR One logo stares out at you. Closing then opening can be helpful but only some of the time as well. An icon sits in the task bar when the program is active, but the page preview with the title of the radio story does not update when the radio story changes. Luckily, when you press the volume keys on the keyboard, the NPR One controls appear on-screen next to the volume up/down indicator, with the proper title. Since the program doesn't always start properly, I uninstalled the app. There is a web app available at one.npr.org.

It's just missing a sleep timer, as on the mobile version. Please add that.

Just turn it on and listen! As you 'like' certain stories it curates the stories to your interests, from a huge database of national stories and your local station.

Both windows phone and Windows 8 PC versions of this app are excellent. Good work

Well-designed and works beautifully! Some times the UI for the Next/Pause/Repeat button disappears after leaving the app and coming back to it.

I used to queue stories individually on npr.org, but this is much better: more variety, more local news (though no matter how many times I skip "sports" stories, they keep coming up :). Consistently brings up interesting stories. It does feel odd to skip ahead when a podcast I already subscribe to comes up, but it doesn't appear to interfere with other interests. Swipe navigation is nice, follows standard media playback integration, but the main hang up are the "interesting/share/view story" buttons below the title. Sometimes they're there; sometimes you have to wait for a story to finish, then navigate back to access them (very annoying if you want to "view story" and see images of what is being discussed). And if you accidentally press above or below the button, the story will re-play and you'll lose the one you were listening to. So except for those buttons, a very nice experience.

I like the design and the interface, but what I don't like is the inconsistency. If I just knew that when it started it would work I'd be happy. As it is, I have about a 50% success rate. And, I've not been able to determine what it is that makes it work or not work.
