I gladly pay $15/month for online and mobile access to the Times. They want another $20/month to access the Times app. Ridiculous. Who would pay an extra $240/year for an app when the website is available? Access to the app should come free with the $15/mo or be slightly more. The value just isn't there to ask people to pay $35/mo for web, mobile, and app access.
4 January 2013
I used this app for the introductory $0.99 for 4 weeks of subscription and although I cancelled 4 days before the end of 4 weeks, NY Times still charged me $40 for another full month, after hours with their customer service they haven’t refunded me and have indicated they won’t! I consider that completely fraudulent business practice, as the result I’ll never use any of NY Times services or apps ever again.
20 December 2012
NY Time app promo screen says it will provide a free month of full access so you can evaluate it. But that is not true. Only a limited number of articles can be read without paying 0.99, and presumably entering a credit card so they can bill you if you do not somehow cancel your subscription after the cheap (not free) trial expires. So, I cannot judge the quality of the information ad app, just the crappy quality of the fake offer.
19 December 2012
Supposedly, you get free unlimited access through Jan 31. This is not my experience. My access is restricted, and I have to purchase the tablet subscription to get unrestricted access. I uninstalled it.
13 December 2014
Paid for the web & tablet app subscription. The tablet app almost never works. I'm seeing many others have the same problem. Wow, New York Times. Unbelievable. Wish I subscribed just for the web access.
21 February 2015
Worked fine for over a year. Now won't let me read more than three articles, even though I subscribe. Says I'm logged in, yet keeps bringing me back to log in page.
27 October 2014
I have a brand new Dell Laptop Computer and I have found this app to be so sporadic. Some days I get the updated paper immediately and then other days it won't load at all. I can't figure out what the problem is but it is a nuisance.
31 December 2012
Very expensive for full access. $20/month for tablet and $35/month for "full digital" access. The free version only displays a very limited number of articles. The app itself is intuitive, fast and works very well.
29 January 2013
...nothing special otherwise. Charges $240 per year for minimum tablet access. I don't want to work overtime just to make enough money to afford NY times. I'd rather use other apps that give me 90% of the news but for free.
5 November 2012
This is not a free app. I will be deleting this app now. Thank you very much.
16 May 2015
NYT app does not work even if I have a web + smart phone subscription. I can log in but still only get 3 articles. It used to work.
I have called and spoken with Tech Support a few times. Has promised to fixed this problem but it's been months now.
23 February 2015
You need a NY Times subscription to use the app for reading more than 3 articles per day. Problem is that the app frequently is incapable of recognizing my valid password. The help desk for NYT digital subscriptions provides no help whatsoever. I have been told that I don't have a subscription (not true). I was told to delete and reinstall the app (doesn't help). I was told that Explorer 8 is not supported (irrelevant). After more than 2 years of intermittent problems with password recognition and worthless help desk advice, I have given up and will no longer use the app.
The NYT app provides some but not all content. Quotes within articles are usually not shown (in particular, long quotes are often omitted). Web links do not work from the app. Illustrations are sometimes missing (charts, maps, sometimes photographs).
22 December 2012
The app simply has links all over it taking you to the subscription page where they are selling holiday priced subscriptions. There may in fact be value there, however, it is not free. Bad marketing.
30 December 2013
I'm a professor and have subscribed to NYT-online from the very beginning. This app does not allow full access of NYT content! For example, the Education Section is not accessible via this app. Subscribers need to exit the app and access via NYT.Com.
21 December 2012
It says it's free through January 31st, but most content is still locked unless you pay $.99 and provide them with a credit card so they can charge you if you don't cancel.
An honest description would be that it's a DISCOUNTED subscription, it is certainly not free.
There are plenty of free news sources, that are always free, and don't lie to me.
3 November 2012
I bought the Desktop + Phone subscription package. Now I can't use this with Windows 8 because I need a "Tablet" subscription for my desktop? It seems like the policy is more or less "buy every option or you get nothing."
(Not that impressed with the app anyway, but then I'm not that impressed with any Windows 8 app. It solves problems that didn't exist and creates new ones.)
13 November 2012
The look and feel of the app is nice, but many of the stories listed have a "locked" icon. If you click on them, you're prompted to pay for a subscription.
So this app is "free" in the sense that watching an advertisement is free. It's just trying to get you to buy something.
4 November 2012
FYI, only Top news and video are free. Everything else require paid subscription,
26 October 2012
super performant. much faster than the built in news app! Nice job!
2 February 2013
So lame, I have a digital subscription but can't see articles in the app I can in the browser. Soon to delete this and go back to daily emails which give me a more convenient summary of the news and especially the editorial/op pieces.
12 November 2012
Thought this would be a nice way to see NYT headlines on my start screen on my laptop, but this is really the tablet app, and NYT charges extra to read from a tablet, even if you pay for a digital subscription. Also, side scrolling layout of equal sized boxes is visually boring, sections are not well delineated, and I did not see any way to get a quick overview of content. I already pay for the Times. No reason to pay extra for an inferior version.
5 November 2012
I've decided to pay for NYT content via my digital subscription because I value this newspaper. However, if I want to consume the same content using this app, NYT seems to want to charge me more for what I already pay for and get via my windows 8 phone and via other web browsers. I think this is shameful.
25 October 2012
Great, easy to read home page layout. Support for semantic zoom. Ability to change article font. Good column: three in landscape and one in portrait orientation. Great, clear videos. All of this makes it easy to navigate and read and watch.
25 October 2012
I couldn't think of a better way to consume content from the New York Times than this app. Absolutely stunning.
30 December 2014
This Windows 8 app is a sad shadow of the Android equivalent. Initially most annoying is its irregular refusal to let me log in. "Try again later". Sure, thanks. Sections are not updated, most notably the various blogs. Last post 63 days ago? Maybe not. And crashes are frequent. The latest is the tendency to take control and flash through all the articles, displaying each one for a second, before moving on. An absurd parody of an app.
25 March 2014
Update... after months of being completely inadequate... still does not work on WiFi only devices. Does not download stories, only headlines. Useless when offline. Works correctly on android phone... bad on Windows tablet.
27 January 2014
When using on a Windows 8 tablet does not allow you to read articles offline unless you first download them individually online.
28 August 2013
This was one of my favorite and most used apps in the store right behind OneNote, but starting on July 27, 2013 this app started failing to load pages and update content. As a subscriber it was very useful and I used it to read most articles so I am quite disappointed that it no longer works. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it to no avail. That process only cleared the cached articles and nothing loads. If it gets fixed then it is a good app, but for now this only good for frustration.
22 August 2013
Only the sections you have read are refreshed and stored on the device. So of you disconnect from the web(get on an airplane or into a car), you cannot read the next section of the news.
27 July 2013
I used to use app but it no longer loads. message says " This page failed to load" " There was a problem Please try again." Nothing works. I have uninstalled and reinstalled a number of times. Tile on home page continues to update. N
